The amount of controlled lines he puts on every page is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a comic before. Most artists would get loose with a brush to fudge an army of thousands. Not Trad Moore - he draws every tree in the forest as a distinct shape. It’s incredible. Colorist Felipe Sobreiro seems to know exactly the amount of color to use to amplify the storytelling and the art without being distracting, which is no easy thing with this sort of clean, detailed line art. This is a story that spoke to me on a lot of levels. I remember the ads in the back of comics. The drawn strong man selling his never-fail exercise solution to turn you from a zero to a hero. Luther sends for the book...and it works. He becomes a nerd's dream. But his newfound strength comes with a price. A threat from biblical times that may take away everything and everyone he loves. I haven't finished it yet, but it is a gritty, inspiring story that is a refreshing stray away from mainstream Marvel & DC. My problem with my purchase is that the book came to me heavily damaged and filthy! I take care of my own books, and proudly display them on my shelves when I'm not reading them, but I keep this in a box. It was like the Amazon workers in the warehouse kicked it around before packaging it and sending it off to me. I've been buying from Amazon for years, and this is the first time they truly disappointed me. BUT...as far as the product itself goes, this is a must read for comic and graphic novel fans. Then picked up each of the three volume in trade collections, and when I found out about this all-in-one deluxe edition, I had to get my hands on it. Needless to say, I’m a fan of the story in a big way. But this collection really seals the deal with a larger sized page, more extras than previous editions had, and just an overall cover design that’s clean looks great in the collection. Solid book. The story is fine, though it doesn't rise beyond the sum of its parts (superheroes, serial killers, biblical epic). Then again, it was far more entertaining that the usual big-publisher fair. But yeah, the art... Moore's style develops considerably over the course of the collection, which is really something given that he starts off doing some next-level stuff. The action is simultaneously hyper-kinetic and hyper-rendered. Folding and draping in the clothes create the effect of speed and movement. The anatomy is squash and stretch but also weirdly plausible. The layouts are equally creative. If you have a soft spot for great action cartoonists then you're going to want this. Every part-the storyline, the key concepts, the characters, the brilliant art (which is so astonishingly well-suited to the intense action sequences and gore). A fantastic deconstruction of so many things I love-superhero tales, slasher movies and the hero's journey. A dark, but ultimately hopeful, tale of what power costs and what we think 'hero' means today as opposed to what it meant in times past. Long ago, 'hero' didn't mean 'good person'. It meant 'mighty warrior', and does this series ever show the chasm of difference between the two. Also contains some of THE most spectacular fight scenes ever penned, great dialogue, and characters that both entertain with their wit and humanity as well impress and horrify with their willingness to do violence.
