• 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Holmes -- A must-read! : The story of “Vix, My Lockdown Friend” is an essential for the bookshelf of all wildlife lovers and enthusiasts. But “Vix” is so much more than that. The adorable, wild fox that visited Marion’s garden and became her friend at such a difficult time is a story that will touch your heart. Written with brutal honesty, Marion describes how she was grieving the loss of both her mum and her husband at a time when the UK went into Covid-19 lock-down; many of us will identify with the loss of physical touch and hugs which added to the pain. Vix gave Marion a new focus, and the touching relationship that ensued will leave you moved to tears of both sadness and joy in equal measure. The book is filled with beautiful black and white photos of this stunning fox, along with Marion’s humorous anthropomorphising. If this story doesn’t move you, I really don’t know what will! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kadjo -- A beautifully written book which celebrates the healing power of nature : This is a beautifully written book which details how the author was helped to deal with the loss of her beloved husband by befriending a wild urban fox that turned up one day in her garden. There are poignant passages which describe the months leading up to her husband’s death from cancer and deeply moving moments where she searingly describes the grief and despair which at times overwhelms her as she tries to come to terms with his death. There is also a great deal of joy as she recounts her increasing encounters with the fox which she christens “Vix”. From their first meeting it is clear Vix is in need of help - scarred, suffering from mange and in cub. The author senses another soul in need of compassion and support and sets out to do what she can for a wild animal. The burgeoning trust between fox and human is at the heart of the book as we follow their interactions across a year blighted by Covid and lockdowns. It is a beautifully drawn friendship but with the author always respecting that Vix is a wild creature and their encounters are always on Vix’s terms. There are also plenty of foxy facts that we learn along the way, not least Vix’s penchant for whole eggs and raw “chompy chicken”! The author documented the journey of her friendship with Vix via posts on social media through the “Self-Isolating Bird Club” Facebook pages. There we learn she found many kindred spirits who shared her love of wildlife but also provided the support and the kindness of strangers. This gentle and ultimately uplifting book is a testament to the healing power of nature and the ability of a relationship forged with a wild animal to change a life. I haven’t started reading it yet but my mum has. She says that it’s very well written and that it made her cry when Marian was talking about the loss of her husband.
